Saw this movie last week. Highly recommended to all interested in the process of animal training. Contrasts punishment vs reinforcement approaches to modifying animal behavior. Animals can be trained by punishing mistakes; but the damage to the animal’s mind is hidden from view.
Either you don’t care, or if you have the courage to look, (as ) “your horse is a mirror to your soul, sometimes you may not like what you see. Sometimes, you will.” Buck Brannaman.
Many will see this a story of a skilled horse trainer; others will also see a man who lived through extremely punitive treatment as a child to live a life of compassion and generosity toward all living creatures.
That beauty of using reinforcement, is the dog starts to learn it as a principle for interaction
The beauty of an Aussie running out to the ball, scooping it up as she passes by, swinging wide with pleasure to gallop back, to give it to hand, to do the loop out again. Sent from Bill Stavers’s BlackBerry. Follow me on Twitter: @laRetriever
